Self-Reliance
The Suburban Sentinel is an advocate of reasonable self-reliance. That is being able to fend for oneself and the family without modern conveniences or assistance for an indefinite time period under reasonably foreseeable circumstances.
Note that Sentinel is not an extreme "survivalist" or "prepper". He doesn't have a nuclear hardened bunker and doesn't suit up in camos and go running around in the woods with a rifle training to repel an invading army. However he does stand ready to care for and defend himself and his family from criminal activity or a significant, widespread disruption in services/infrastructure due to weather or other disaster event.
Self-reliance entails having a variety of skills and equipment to keep the family safe and sound during an extended civil emergency. Self-protection requires proficiency with suitable weapons such as firearms. The Sentinel blog contains discussions for survival skills and equipment as well as firearms. The applicable blog topics are located here.
